What Is a Public IP Address?

Learn what a public IP address is, how websites see it, and how it differs from addresses used inside your local network.

A public IP address is an internet-routable address associated with the connection that reaches a website or service. It may be assigned to a home router, mobile carrier gateway, business firewall, VPN endpoint, or other network edge.

Public addresses make two-way internet communication possible. They are not the same thing as a person’s identity and usually do not expose an exact home address by themselves.
